Springfield, IL - Nestor A. Ramirez, M.D., M.P.H., Champaign, was elected president-elect of the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) during its 2016 annual meeting here.

Dr. Ramirez is board-certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine. He serves on the medical staffs at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and Norwegian American Hospital, both in Chicago, and is a fellow with the American Academy of Pediatrics.  Dr. Ramirez has an academic appointment as a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Champaign-Urbana.

Active in ISMS since 1986, Dr. Ramirez chairs the International Medical Graduate Section Governing Council and is a member of the Council on Education and Health Workforce. He is a member of the American Medical Association and American Academy of Pediatrics.  Locally he belongs to the Champaign County Medical Society.

Dr. Ramirez received his medical degree from Pontifical Xaverian University in Bogota, Columbia. He completed his internship at Saint Ignatius University Hospital in Bogota, Columbia and his residency at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and University of Tennessee/LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

His term as ISMS president-elect will run through April 2019.


Founded in 1840, ISMS is a professional membership association representing Illinois physicians in all medical specialties, and their patients, statewide.
