A Simple Tool Can Help Prevent Opioid Abuse. Are You Using it?
Posted on: 6/8/2017

You won't want to miss an upcoming webinar about how to address the opioid epidemic with the use of a powerful free resource: the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP).

Sign up for The PMP: A Clinical Tool in Improving Prescribing Decisions. This webinar will take place on Tuesday, June 20 at noon, and be presented by Randy Malan, the clinical director of Illinois' PMP.

Whether you are new to the PMP or a regular user, Mr. Malan’s insights on effective use of this important tool will help keep your patients safe. While registration in the PMP increased by 25 percent from 2014 to 2016, physicians must remain vigilant in their efforts to combat opioid overprescribing and misuse.

The webinar is offered at no cost to ISMS members and their staff. The webinar is also free for ISMIE Mutual policyholders and their staff. All others pay $150.

Here's what ISMS members, who are pain physicians, had to say about the PMP

Sandeep D. Amin, MD: "Before the PMP we were blind, as physicians, to a patient's prescription history. The only way to find out if a patient was abusing medications was by calling the pharmacy or performing a urine drug test. The PMP gave doctors a blueprint, so that prescribers can now know where patients are getting prescriptions and how much they are getting."

Asokumar Buvanendran, MD: "Almost every time I prescribe a Schedule II narcotic I use the PMP. It allows me to see whether the patient has multiple prescriptions for narcotics or they've never had a narcotics prescription before. What I see in the PMP helps me in my conversation with a patient as well as in setting their dosage."
