Illinois’ Insurance Exchange for 2018: Shorter Enrollment Period, Fewer Navigators
Posted on: 11/7/2017

Open enrollment is now in full swing for patients seeking coverage through Get Covered Illinois, the state's health insurance Marketplace.

As you're bound to get questions from patients about the insurance exchange, ISMS offers a FREE patient education flyer on Marketplace coverage for 2018. Be sure to keep a stack on hand to distribute to your patients or link to from your practice website or social media accounts.

Important changes to be aware of include:

  • The open enrollment period for 2018 is shorter than previous years by several weeks, running Nov. 1, 2017, to Dec. 15, 2017.

  • The Department of Insurance has also eliminated many staff positions of counselors and educators – called navigators – who help educate people about their health care options under Get Covered Illinois.

Currently enrolled patients will be automatically re-enrolled in a similar policy* for 2018 if they take no action. If they want to make any changes, they must do so during the open enrollment period.

For more details, visit ISMS' Marketplace web page.

If you have questions, call the ISMS Division of Member Advocacy at 800-782-4767 ext. 1470 or send an email.

*Patients should be aware that most plans change each year – even if operated by the same insurance company.
