As you know, last year a new law took effect that renewed the Nurse Practice Act with modifications to provide advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) with full practice authority and the ability to practice without a written collaborative agreement. The new law also provides APRNs with certain prescribing authority if they meet various conditions.

As a result, ISMS has updated the medical legal guideline, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Authority to Diagnose and Prescribe. This resource provides an overview of current statutory requirements for health-care team relationships, specifically APRNs’ authority to diagnose and prescribe.

Please note: This updated resource includes text from the new law. But because the corresponding regulatory changes are not yet in place, the law temporarily supersedes existing regulations.

ISMS cannot provide legal advice, and private legal matters should be referred to your practice attorney. If you have questions, please contact the ISMS Legal Department at 800-782-4767 ext. 6485 or send an email.
