Medical Corporation License Deadline Approaches; New Law Will Impact Licensure Cycle
Posted on: 12/18/2018

Medical corporations, limited liability companies, and professional service corporations in Illinois are required by law to be licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).

Regardless of the date on which the license was issued, corporate licenses must adhere to IDFPR's license renewal schedule – which recently changed.

In 2018, Senate Bill 3398 was enacted into law, changing the annual license renewal cycle from annual to once every three years.

How to proceed under Illinois’ new law pertaining to corporation licensure:

  1. Physicians must renew their corporation license NOW before the current Dec. 31, 2018, deadline via IDFPR's Online License Renewal web page. The renewal fee is $40.

  2. Once renewed, your license will be valid through the year 2021 due to the new licensure cycle. The next time you will need to renew is the fall of 2021 (typically during the 30 days prior to the end of the calendar year).

Please note: If a physician does not renew a medical corporation license by a deadline, IDFPR may issue a notice of violation to the corporation, which could include late fees, penalties or disciplinary proceedings against the corporation.

Remember, medical corporations must be licensed by IDFPR separately from a physician's individual medical license and controlled substance license(s).
