  • Governor Rauner Bill Vetoes Hurts Injured Workers, Snuffs Out Tobacco 21

But our fight is not over – ISMS will actively seek an override to these bills!

On Tuesday, Governor Rauner applied an amendatory veto of Senate Bill 904, basically killing important bipartisan protections within the workers’ compensation system. The governor’s action gives workers’ comp insurance companies permission to continue to skirt current law on payment of workers’ compensation claims.

Also this week the governor shot down an important public health bill that would have raised the legal age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21. ISMS supported Illinois' Tobacco 21 legislation (Senate Bill 2332), as nearly all adult smokers started as kids.

Governor Rauner recently signed House Bill 4953 into law, which requires professionals (who need continuing education to renew their licenses) to complete 1 hour of education related to sexual harassment prevention. (The 1 hour would be part of the 150 CME hours.)

Please note: IDFPR has not yet set the rules as to what exactly will fulfill this educational requirement.

  • New Parity Law Will Ensure Timely, Appropriate Access to Mental Health Treatment

In response to the opioid crisis in Illinois, ISMS worked together with the Illinois Psychiatric Society to help pass legislation to improve mental health parity compliance and access to treatment for patients.

Last week Governor Rauner signed Senate Bill 1707 into law, which provides Illinois with a strengthened mental health parity statute.

State regulators must now actively regulate parity compliance under the law.
