ISMS President Paul E. Pedersen, MD, discusses how teen smoking affected his family.

Great news! Last weekend Governor Pritzker signed House Bill 345 into law, raising the legal age to purchase tobacco products in Illinois from 18 to 21. The new law covers all tobacco and nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, and takes effect July 1, 2019.

In February, ISMS’ then-President-Elect Paul E. Pedersen, MD, was one of the speakers that joined Illinois lawmakers and other public health advocacy organizations at a press conference to advocate for this legislation.

Ironically, Dr. Pedersen was unable to attend the bill signing ceremony last weekend because he was being inaugurated as ISMS president. Congratulations to him, and thanks to everyone who made Tobacco 21 in Illinois a reality!
