How Did the CDC's 2016 Opioid Prescribing Guideline Impact Prescribing?
Posted on: 5/2/2019

In 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released its Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain.

Now three years later, the authors of the CDC’s guideline have fashioned a “perspective” article on how the medical and health policy communities have fared with the guideline’s recommendations.

The authors commend efforts to implement prescribing recommendations, but note that some policies and practices purportedly derived from the guideline have been inconsistent with its recommendations – even causing harm to patients by denying needed medications.

To learn more, read the perspective "No Shortcuts to Safer Opioid Prescribing," which was published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
