Remove Barriers that Restrict Marijuana Research!

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) recently introduced a bill that would remove restrictions on federal research to further study the health effects of marijuana use.

Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law – a classification that imposes restrictions on scientific research. As a result, medical research conducted on this drug has been very limited, and key information – such as its impact on children, pregnant women and drivers – has not been studied in the United States.

With Illinois’ medical cannabis program in full swing and the rollout of recreational use coming in January, it’s critical that we know much more about the potential benefits and harm of this drug.

ISMS supports this legislation.
