Posted on: 8/22/2019

Do your patients ask how they can properly dispose of unused or outdated medications?

Leading pharmacies now offer a safe drug disposal option that customers can use at home.

The product is called the DisposeRxpacket, which contains a blend of solidifying materials. Customers add water and the powder from the packet to unwanted medication in its prescription vial and then shake the container. The drugs become a useless gel, allowing for safe disposal at home.

The frontline battle of the opioid epidemic is preventing prescription drugs from getting diverted. Whether unused or expired drugs are sitting in home medicine cabinets or inside medical facilities, safe disposal is critical to keeping patients and communities safe – and tools like this make it easier.

Remember, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) also offers National Prescription Drug Take Back Days, and you can also help your patients locate a convenient collection site. The next take-back day is Oct. 26, 2019.
