In August, Governor Pritzker signed Senate Bill 2023 into law, making the state's Medical Cannabis Patient Program permanent. In addition, the new law:

  • Expands who can certify; in addition to physicians, certifying healthcare professionals now include advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants.

  • Adds eleven new qualifying conditions.

  • Introduces provisional access registration cards, which are available to persons who apply online for the Medical Cannabis Patient Program; the provisional registration card allows the qualifying patient and designated caregiver, if applicable, to access a medical cannabis dispensary while the patient’s application is being processed.

ISMS’ newly updated medical legal guideline Medical Cannabis* covers what physicians need to know about this topic, including the Opioid Alternative Pilot Program.

Although recreational marijuana will become legal in Illinois in less than two weeks, interest in medical cannabis certification is expected to remain steady due to the higher taxes that will be imposed on non-medical purchases.
