A new federal rule that takes effect on April 5 impacts
individual physicians and physician groups who use electronic health records
(EHRs). The rule pertains to “information blocking,” a term that describes
obstructing access to information in an individual’s electronic health record.
Broadly speaking,
the rule requires physicians to make patients’ electronic health information
available on request without imposing restrictions, excessive delays or other
deliberate interference.
