Making the Economic Case for Face Covering

mask Wear a mask! That’s the message that needs to be reinforced to the general public. ISMS has partnered with Illinois business groups and the Illinois Health and Hospital Association to do just that.

While infection rates are lower here than in neighboring states, the number of positive COVID-19 diagnoses have been inching up since moving to Phase 4 of the Restore Illinois plan. A diverse coalition of interests united together to sound the alarm.

In a joint statement, ISMS President Robert W. Panton, MD, warned Illinoisans: “It’s very possible we could lose the progress Illinois has made against COVID-19 if people aren’t wearing masks in public.” Similar messages were shared by leaders of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association and the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association. In total, more than 20 groups urged mask use in order to improve the public health and economic health of our state.

Illinois has done well so far in the fight against COVID-19, but we can’t relax yet. Hopefully a united message from health professionals and business leaders will drive the point home!
