Enterovirus D68

Outbreaks of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) in Illinois have placed physicians and practices on alert for EV D68 manifestations in patients, especially children.

While EV-D68 most often presents as a common cold, the virus can cause respiratory distress in children and those with compromised respiratory systems (i.e., asthma).

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) continues to monitor the situation and encourages individuals to take the following steps to reduce the chance of spreading the virus:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water.
  • Avoid close contact (touching and shaking hands) with people who are sick.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
  • Stay home when sick.
